At the Family Resource Counseling Center we have a psychiatrist on-site, available by appointment. The Family Resource Counseling Center is a private practice therapy office located in West Los Angeles, near Santa Monica and Beverly Hills. We also offer a variety of individual and group services for infants, children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families experiencing a wide variety of issues. If you would like more information regarding psychiatrists we have provided some resources below for your convenience. (Encarta, 2006) A psychiatrist is a doctor of medicine who has had four years of postgraduate training in psychiatry. Many psychiatrists take further training in psychoanalysis, child psychiatry, or other subspecialties. Psychiatrists treat patients in private practice, in general hospitals, or in specialized facilities for the mentally ill (psychiatric hospitals, outpatient clinics, or community mental health centers). Some spend part or all of their time doing research or administering mental health programs. People often ask what the difference is between a psychiatrist and a psychologist. A psychologist often works closely with psychiatrists and treats many of the same kinds of patients yet are not extensively trained in medicine and therefore do not administer drugs. Psychologists have extensive graduate training in clinical treatment and diagnostic assessment for their clients. Psychologists provide counseling on a short-term and long-term basis. A typical session with a psychotherapist would include talking about current and past struggles, relationships and family dynamics in an effort to improve communication and coping skills. For someone who is experiencing a mental disorder or who has been through a trauma, usually there will be changes in physical functioning, behavior, emotions, thoughts, perceptions, interpersonal relationships, sexuality, work, and play. People are not always sure what kind of help they need, and many understandably want a “magic pill.” While there isn’t such a thing, there are medications that may be appropriate. It is usually recommended that one receive counseling in conjunction to taking medication.
